IBM has moved Watson to the cloud where the company is using it to liberate dark data from video footage. In this interview with Dave Mowrey, Head of Product – Watson Media, he talks about how this enables new video business models.

IBM is leveraging Watson to deliver a new metadata extraction product. The tool analyzes the video and extracts keywords, scene sentiment, and performs visual analysis of what’s happening in a scene. This generates much better data for personalization engines to operator upon. Mr. Mowrey claims this causes a huge lift in key performance metrics for the video.

Watson enables a much more in-depth understanding of the video. This allows viewing behavior to be linked to more specific events or moods in the video. This, in turn, allows content creators to make better decisions about the content they create in the future.

Mr. Mowrey explains that, although IBM has a full suite of video delivery products, companies do not have to use them to use Watson.
